Renewables bring 14.3% of Estonian power in Q3 2014

Oct 27, 2014 - Estonia met 14.3% of its total power consumption in the third quarter of 2014 using renewable energy sources, Latvian news agency LETA said today.

The share compares to 11.2% a year earlier.

Renewable power generation in the period reached 288 GWh, up 33% year-over-year. Wind farms were responsible for 38% of the green output, while biomass, biogas and waste-to-energy plants contributed 60%.

According to the report, the country’s transmission system operator (TSO) Elering has paid EUR 13.2 million (USD 17m) in subsidies for 253 GWh of renewable electricity in July-September 2014. The amount is 8% higher than in the same quarter of 2013.

Under the European Union’s 20-20-20 plan, Estonia has to source from renewables 25% of its energy by the end of the decade. In March 2014, EU’s statistics office Eurostat said that the country has already met that goal, having achieved a renewable energy share of 25.2% as early as 2012.
