Norway-headquartered solar panel maker REC Solar Holdings AS today said it has produced a batch of multicrystalline silicon (multi-Si) solar cells with an average efficiency of 20.21%.
The company made improvements in all steps of the manufacturing process, from silicon to cell production. The best cell in the batch reached 20.47% efficiency measured by an in-house tester with an external calibration cell.
From November 2016 the new process will be applied to REC’s production lines at its factory in Singapore, it said, noting that the company “is the first known manufacturer to successfully achieve such high cell efficiency on a multicrystalline platform for industrial-scale production”.
REC Solar makes all from polysilicon to wafers, cells and turnkey solar solutions. It is a unit of Chinese-owned Bluestar Elkem Investment.
