Public exhibition opens for 1.5-GW wind project in New South Wales

The Aussie arm of German renewable projects developer Energiequelle is undertaking a public exhibition process for a prince envisaging the construction of a 1.5-GW wind farm with battery storage in Australia’s New South Wales state.

The proposal of Virya Energy will be on public display between November 18 and December 15, the state government said. It has been designated the status of a State Significant Development.

Dubbed Uanco Delta Wind Farm, the project calls for the installation of up to 208 wind turbine generators with individual capacities of up to 8 MW and a tip height not exceeding 270 metres (886 feet) and related transmission infrastructure. The project also comes with a plan for an 800-MW/800-MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system.

The developer has selected a site northwest of the town of Jerilderie, within the recently declared South West Renewable Energy Zone. It estimates the required investment at some AUD 3.45 billion (USD 2.32bn/EUR 2.23bn).

Provided that the needed planning permit and grid connection agreement are in place, Virya Energy could commence building activities in 2024/2025, with the first turbine planned to go online at the end of 2025.

Project construction is planned to be carried out in phases.
