US energy storage company Powin LLC will deliver 1.7 GWh of energy storage systems to Australian battery project developer Akaysha Energy in a deal that marks the Oregon-based firm’s entry into the Aussie market.
The framework agreement will see Powin, which has already delivered over 2,500 MWh of BESS globally, deploy the energy storage systems for its Aussie partner over the next two years, it said on Tuesday. Details about Akaysha Energy’s specific projects were not available.
“This partnership is a key milestone as we expand our footprint globally and invest in new regions,” said Powin’s CEO Geoff Brown.
Akaysha Energy has more than 3 GWh of energy storage capacity in its portfolio. Earlier this month, the company became the acquisition target of a fund managed by BlackRock Real Assets. When it announced the agreement, the buyer committed to spending more than AUD 1 billion (USD 689.7m/EUR 688.5m) on the construction of nine battery projects that Akaysha Energy is currently developing at home.
Powin and Akaysha Energy have already been working for several months on the use of Powin’s power plant controller, known as StackOS, and say they are well-advanced in the grid-connection process.
