Mostyn SeaPower Ltd, a firm owned by the Port of Mostyn in North Wales, plans to build a GBP-590-million (USD 730m/EUR 652.5m) tidal lagoon.
The lagoon, which will provide flood protection in addition to generating power, will stretch for 6.7 km from the port to Point of Ayr in Flintshire. The scheme calls for the installation of eight 16 MW turbines within two housings to generate around 298 GWh of power per year.
Mostyn SeaPower intends to file an application for a development consent by the end of 2022. It has already agreed with National Grid Plc (LON:NG) for the nearby Connah’s Quay power plant to use the output of the lagoon.
According to the port’s managing director, Jim O’Toole, it will take four years to build the lagoon wall, turbine housings and sluices. The turbines will be installed simultaneously with the lagoon wall. First power could be produced in mid-2027, with full completion planned for later that year.
The project is expected to create some 300 jobs during construction and then provide employment for between 25 and 30 locals during its operational life.
