Oxford PV perovskite-silicon solar cell hits 28% efficiency

December 21 (Renewables Now) - UK perovskite solar firm Oxford PV said on Thursday it has achieved a 28% efficiency for a perovskite-silicon tandem solar cell, beating its own world record.

The announcement comes a few months after the company registered a 27.3% efficiency for a perovskite-silicon solar cell in June, which it then said is a record-high. The latest result was achieved with a 1-sq-cm perovskite-silicon tandem solar cell and was certified by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Colorado, US.

“We are continuing to push our perovskite-silicon solar cell technology, with a roadmap that extends beyond 30% efficiency,” said chief technology officer Chris Case.

Oxford PV has an industrial pilot line in Germany that is already producing commercial-sized 156 mm x 156 mm cells for validation by its development partner, an unnamed manufacturer of silicon solar cells and modules. The company is working to transfer its perovskite-silicon tandem solar cell technology from the lab to high-volume manufacturing. Its CEO Frank P Averdung noted that Oxford PV has already laid the foundations for that project through partnering with key industry players.
