Dec 4, 2013 - The number of permits issued to photovoltaic (PV) projects on Hawaii’s Oahu island contracted by a half in November from a year earlier, the Pacific Business News said Tuesday.
The drop marks the seventh month in a row with declining figures, the news portal said, presenting data collected by Marco Mangelsdorf, president of Hilo-based ProVision Solar. The City and County of Honolulu have issued 1,040 permits for PV projects last month, 956 less than in the same month of 2012.
The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Planning and Permitting awarded 12,163 permits in the first 11 months of 2013, down 20% on the year. For the year-to-date period the reported value of greenlighted projects proposed by the top 25 contractors was also 20% belowe last-year's USD 427 million (EUR 314m).
The top three companies, when counting permits obtained between January-November, were Vivint Solar with 1,630 permits, Honolulu’s Alternate Energy Inc with 1,571 permits and Hawaii Energy Connection with 1,465 permits. They were followed by SolarCity Corp (NASDAQ:SCTY), which was awarded 866 permits, and local RevoluSun LLC with 700 permits.
