NRG completes 5-MW of rooftop PV in Vegas, eyes further 1.5 MW
Oct 24, 2014 - US utility NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) said Thursday it had finalised the installation of a 5-MW rooftop solar array in Las Vegas, Nevada and unveiled plans for a second one of 1.5 MW capacity.
NRG financed, built, owns and operates the installation at MGM Resorts International’s (NYSE:MGM) Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino convention centre. The initial photovoltaic (PV) system is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 1,000 local households per year.
The two companies intend to jointly build another 1.5-MW system upon completion of a future expansion of the same conference centre, which will commence later in 2014. The electricity generated by both solar systems will be sold to MGM Resorts under a power purchase agreement.
The new installations will ensure pricing stability for MGM Resorts and will also reduce its consumption from the southern Nevada grid, especially during periods of peak demand. The output of the total 6.5-MW capacity will offset 6,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually.
