New York Governor Kathy Hochul on Thursday announced awards from its latest procurement round through which it will add about 2.4 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) and roughly 160 MW of battery storage capacity.
The initiative, touted as the state’s largest land-based renewable energy procurement to date, resulted in the selection of 22 large-scale projects. Their implementation is estimated to bring more than USD 2.7 billion (EUR 2.5bn) in private investment to New York, the Governor’s press office said.
The project awards are divided by region, namely Capital Region, Central New York, Mohawk Valley, North Country, Southern Tier and Western New York. Among the winners is an affiliate of EDF Renewables with a 350-MW solar farm proposal with 20 MW of co-located battery storage in Niagara County, as well as an affiliate of Boralex with a plan to install a 250-MW solar park with 77 MW of integrated storage in Franklin County.

The capacity to be deployed from the selected projects will generate electricity that will cover the annual power consumption of more than 620,000 local homes.
At present, New York has 120 solar, onshore and offshore wind projects under development totalling more than 14.2 GW, which, when installed, will raise the share of renewables in the state’s overall mix to around 66%. The state aims to source 70% of its power from renewables by the end of the decade and have a zero-emission grid by 2040.
