SKOPJE (Macedonia), September 7 (SeeNews) – Macedonian company AB Solar has launched the construction of a 5.0 million euro ($6.4 million) photovoltaic (PV) power plant in the country's southwest, Skopje-based media reported on Tuesday.
The solar power station will have a capacity of 1.0 megawatt (MW), news agency Makfax (www.makfax.com.mk) reported.
With over 300 sunny days per year, the region of Demir Hisar is very suitable for solar energy generation, Makfax reported, quoting an unnamed company representative.
The construction of the PV power plant will be completed in a few months, the article added.
In May, Macedonia’s Regulatory Energy Commission licensed Bitola-based AB Solar to produce electricity from renewable energy sources.
European Union directives and Macedonia’s long-term energy strategy require the country to produce about 20% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.
Macedonia was granted an EU candidate status in 2005 and awaits a date for the start of accession negotiations.
