Macedonian Hydro Power Plant Matka Back on Stream After Capacity/Efficiency Upgrade

SKOPJE (Macedonia), April 15 (SeeNews) – Power distributor EVN Macedonia AD, part of Austrian energy group EVN, said on Wednesday that the local Matka hydro power plant it operates has resumed operation after an upgrade that doubled its capacity to 9.6 megawatts (MW).

The efficiency of the power plant, located near the capital of Skopje, was improved by 90%, EVN said in a statement.

The upgrade of the power station, on the Treska river, was carried out by Czech company Hydropol, the statement said, without elaborating on the project costs.

As part of EVN’s investment programme, a total of 11 small hydro power plants in Macedonia will also be upgraded by the end of the year, the statement added.

Macedonia generated 738 gigawatts of hydro power in 2008, out of a total of 5.615 gigawatts of electricity produced in the country that year, power producer AD ELEM said in its annual report.

EVN bought Macedonia's electricity distribution company ESM in 2006. Last year, it renamed it to EVN Macedonia.
