Lease approved for 4.9-MW solar project at W Australia landfill

The Fremantle Council last week approved the business plan for the 4.9-MW South Fremantle Solar Farm, which is to be located at the former South Fremantle landfill in Western Australia.

Тhe project has thus moved another step closer to becoming a reality. It received planning approval from the City of Fremantle in April.

The business plan set out a proposed lease for the land to Australian renewables developer Epuron. The term of the lease is 25 years with an option for a 15-year extension and the rate is AUD 1 per year. There is an opportunity for rent reviews to increase the rent if the solar farm starts to make a commercial return.

"The site currently generates no income for the City, and the environmental constraints mean any permanent development is not feasible for many years," said acting mayor Ingrid Waltham. "Leasing the land at a peppercorn rate will allow the land to have some use, with no change to the City’s financial obligations," Waltham added.

The solar farm is part of the city's One Planet Strategy target of being 100% renewable energy-powered by 2025.

The lease will be signed once the project has secured all needed environmental approvals.
