Izmir's ESHOT to go solar with 1.38-MW project

As part of a plan to produce green energy for its fleet of 20 electric buses for public transportation, Izmir Electricity, Water, Coal Gas, Buses and Trolley Buses (ESHOT) is building a 1.38-MW solar park, the General Directorate announced today.

The solar power plant, consisting of 3,680 photovoltaic (PV) panels, is being installed on the roof of ESHOT’s workshop in Buca, western Turkey. The output is to be used to charge the environmentally friendly buses. This will avoid annual carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of five thousand tonnes, the bus service says.

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is known for its green investments in transportation. Besides its fleet of 20 electric buses, the municipality has also invested in environmentally friendly ships and trams, a subway, and suburban railway systems. In accordance with the Covenant of Mayors launched by the European Union with the aim to reduce CO2 emissions and fight global warming, of which Izmir Metropolitan Municipality became part in 2015, the municipality is committed to increasing energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy in its territory.
