Italy's clean energy capacity rises 11% to 26.5 GW in 2009

(ADPnews) - Oct 29, 2010 - Italy's installed renewable power capacity grew 11% on the year to 26,500 MW in 2009, contributing 19% to the country's total power production, according to state energy management agency GSE's report.

The report on 2009 renewable energy, released on Wednesday, notes that the growth was boosted mainly by 40% surge in wind farms capacity.

According to the report, wind is the second largest renewable source in Italy after hydroelectricity.

At the same time, solar energy capacity jumped 165% to 1,144 MW as solar installations doubled to 71,288, spurred by government incentives.

Clean energy output rose 19% to 69,300 GWh in 2009, mainly thanks to 18% growth in hydropower output to 49,100 GWh.

Italy's EU target is to produce 26% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.
