International Battery gets USD 800,000 state aid for energy storage system in Pennsylvania

(ADPnews) - Nov 16, 2010 - US lithium-ion battery maker International Battery said on Monday it received an USD-800,000 (EUR 587,700) state grant to fund the development of an 800 kWh bulk energy storage system in Pennsylvania.

The company will use the funding awarded by the Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority to design, manufacture and test the system, which can be expanded to 1 MWh.

The system will feature International Battery's large-format lithium-ion battery and battery management system, an inverter and a control system in a 40-foot (12.2 metre) mobile container.

The company said it will collaborate with an inverter firm on the project.

The initial design work has started and the system should be ready for testing by the second quarter of 2011, International Battery said. When completed, it will show the advantages of using large-format batteries for green energy integration and smart grid support, the company added.

International Battery produces rechargeable batteries using an environmentally friendly process.
