German renewables developer Innogy SE (ETR:IGY) has selected the new 14-MW offshore wind turbine model from Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA (BME:SGRE) for its 1.4-GW Sofia project in UK waters.
Both companies issued statements today saying that the order is conditional upon Innogy taking the final investment decision (FID), which the German developer expect to happen in the first quarter of 2021.
As it stands, the order includes the supply of 100 units of the latest SG 14-222 direct-drive (DD) turbine model and a service agreement.
The turbine maker unveiled the concept for the new platform on May 19 and has since secured conditional orders to equip the 300-MW Hai Long 2 project off the coast of Taiwan and the 2,640-MW Dominion Energy Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project in US waters.
The 14-MW titan will be commercially available in 2024, just when Innogy plans to start installing turbines at the Sofia site.
The new wind farm will be located 195 kilometres (121.2 miles) off the UK coast on Dogger Bank in the shallow area of the central North Sea. Innogy expects to start onshore work at its Teesside converter station site in early 2021. Offshore construction is seen to begin in 2023.
