Indian IT services company Infosys Ltd (BOM:500209) on Monday said it has launched a 6.6-MW photovoltaic (PV) power plant at its campus in Pocharam in the state of Telangana.
Combined with an existing 0.6-MW rooftop solar system, the new plant will allow the campus to meet 100% of its electricity needs with renewables, becoming one of the first corporate campuses in India to do so, according to the announcement. The total solar capacity of 7.2 MW has been synchronised with the grid and is expected to generate 12 million kWh of power per year.
Infosys currently has 12 MW of onsite solar power plants across its campuses and a further 3 MW of capacity is due to be completed within the next two months.
The company highlighted its climate change efforts, including its joining the global RE100 campaign and the fact that about 30% of its energy needs are now being met with renewable sources. "We hope other companies will emulate us, aligning to the goals committed by India at COP21, Paris, with an overall objective of creating a sustainable future," said Ramadas Kamath of Infosys.
Phase-2 of the campus in Pocharam is currently under construction and an area has been reserved for Phase-3.
