(ADPnews) - Dec 16, 2010 - Swedish home furnishing retailer Ikea said on Wednesday it would install 1.688 MW of solar power systems on two stores in New Jersey and Massachusetts, in line with its environmental strategy.
After the company receives the go-ahead from the government, construction of the two rooftop installation should begin next year, with completion scheduled for the spring of 2011. Ikea has contracted US grid-tied solar systems provider REC Solar Inc to install the systems, touted the company's largest store-top solar installations in the US.
The 1.058-MW New Jersey unit will be located on the roof of Ikea's Paramus store. It will include 4,600 panels to produce 1.35 million kWh annually, saving 1,072 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
The other facility, a 630-kW system to be installed on the roof of the Stoughton outlet in Massachusetts, will include 2,800 panels. The unit will generate 725,000 kWh a year, offsetting 547 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
These two projects raise the number of Ikea's solar energy facilities to 13. In addition, the company has integrated a geothermal system into an outlet in Centennial, Colorado, to be up and running in the autumn of 2011.
