IDC Energy sees PV module sales nearly doubling to 43.8 GW in 2015

Dec 14, 2011 - Solar photovoltaic (PV) module sales around the globe will grow to 43.8 GW in 2015, from around 22.7 GW in 2011, with Asia/Pacific forming as a key market, IDC Energy Insights projects.

In 2009 and 2010 almost 80% of all PV module shipments were to Europe, and most specifically to Germany, Czech Republic, Italy and Spain. The changes in subsidies, policies, prices and targets have significantly altered the picture and now China, India and other countries in Asia/Pacific are expected to attract the bigger portion of global sales.

IDC Energy expects that Asia/Pacific, Japan included, will account for 49.3% of module shipments in 2015, compared to 22.9% in 2011. Europe's share is seen to decline to 38.7% in 2015 from an estimated 66.4% this year.

"Given the continued dependence of the solar industry on government subsidies, multiple large markets reduce the risk that economic or political challenges in a single region will throw the industry into a tailspin," Jay Holman, research manager at IDC Energy, commented.
