Iberdrola, Vattenfall start development of 7.2 GW offshore wind farm in East Anglia
(SeeNews) – Sep 26, 2012 – Spanish power major Iberdrola (MCE:IBЕ) together with Swedish state-owned utility Vattenfall AB have started the development phase of their up to 7.2 GW offshore wind farm in East Anglia, Iberdrola said yesterday.
Under the project, Scottish Steel Engineering and Aberdeen-based Woods Group will share a EUR 23 million (USD 29.8m) contract for the construction and operation of two meteorological stations, to be located on the coast of Norfolk and Suffolk.
The offshore weather monitoring stations will measure the wind speed and direction, as well as temperature and air pressure, thus paving the way for key technical and engineering decisions, Iberdrola noted. Installation of the meteorological stations is scheduled for the summer of 2013.
The total investment in the East Anglia offshore wind project, which is currently in its preliminary development phase, amounts so far to EUR 62 million. Once completed, the farm will be capable of generating enough clean green energy to power five million homes.
