December 5 (Renewables Now) - Utility Hydro-Quebec on Wednesday announced plans to install 9.5 MW of solar capacity in La Prairie and Varennes next year.

The company intends to start construction of the two solar parks next spring and to commission them in the autumn.

The 8-MW solar plant in La Prairie will consist of 26,000 solar panels and will produce 13 GWh of power a year. The solar system in Varennes, at Hydro-Quebec's research institute, IREQ, will comprise 4,600 panels and will generate 2.6 GWh of electricity annually. Together, the two solar parks will produce enough electricity to cover the needs of about 600 homes.

Hydro-Quebec will use the projects to test the adaptability of solar power to the Quebec climate, to the company's generating fleet and its transmission system.
