Greek distribution system operator DEDDIE/HEDNO will make capacity enhancements at some of its substations to facilitate the grid connection of around 1,755 MW of new renewable power generation.
Energypress reports that the company will source funds from Greece’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) to support the investment. The initiative is estimated to require roughly EUR 30 million (USD 35.2m), of which EUR 12 million will come from the RRF.
The proposed upgrades concern existing low and medium-voltage substations across the country, including facilities in Peloponnese and Epirus, Macedonia and Thrace.
The renewable power plants that will benefit from the plan need to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2025. All contracts are expected to be finalised by the fourth quarter of 2023, according to the report.
Energypress reported earlier this month that DEDDIE/HEDNO is turning down many grid-connection applications for small renewable power plants as the network capacity in some regions has reached its limit.
In June, the European Commission (EC) endorsed Greece’s recovery and resilience plan aimed at helping it address challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The country will get some EUR 17.8 million in grants and EUR 12.7 billion in loans under the RRP.
