GE to supply turbines for 79.8-MW wind project in Japan

GE Renewable Energy today said it will supply the turbines for a 79.8-MW wind farm in Japan of Green Power Investment Corp (GPI).
The Fukaura wind farm, located in Fukaura Town, Nishi Tsugaru District, Aomori Prefecture, will use 19 pieces of the US manufacturer’s 4.2-117 onshore wind turbine. The installation of the machines is due to start in the second quarter of 2023, with the facility expected to be up and running in 2024. As the site is close to Japan’s northwestern sea border, the turbines are optimised to minimise environmental impact and handle extreme weather conditions and Japan’s wind environment, GE said.
This is GE’s third project in Japan with GPI, which is an affiliate of Pattern Energy Group.
The order includes a 10-year full-service contract with potential for extension.
The project is supported by Tohoku Electric Power Co Inc as a strategic partner in GPI’s projects in Tohoku region.
GE sees growth opportunities in Japan. It said that under the Japanese government’s net-zero by 2050 roadmap, there is an estimated 15 GW-16 GW growth potential for onshore wind by 2030.
