Facebook to build 100% renewables-powered data centre in New Mexico

Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) will build its next data centre in Los Lunas, New Mexico and the facility will be entirely powered by renewable energy, the US social networking company said on Wednesday.

To make the data centre 100% renewables-powered the company is working with PNM Resources (NYSE:PNM), the parent of New Mexico utility PNM, to bring new solar and wind energy to the New Mexico grid.

Facebook plans to break ground on the data centre in October.

In a separate announcement, PNM Resources said that as part of efforts to bring the Internet company to New Mexico, the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission (NMPRC) has reviewed and approved a filing from PNM that will enable the utility to build new solar facilities and to deliver renewable energy to meet Facebook's requirement for 100% renewable equivalent power.

In a move to power its Irish facilities with 100% renewables, Facebook earlier this year signed a deal with Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners (NYSE:BEP) for the supply of 150 MW of wind power.
