German energy major E.on SE (ETR:EOAN) said today it has decided to proceed with the 385-MW Arkona offshore wind development in the Baltic Sea and that it has engaged Norwegian peer Statoil (OSL:STL) as a project partner.
Statoil is acquiring a 50% stake in the scheme for an undisclosed sum.
“We have been delivering gas from Norway through three direct pipelines for over 35 years, and Statoil’s entry into German offshore wind adds a new dimension to the Norwegian-German energy partnership,” said Eldar Saetre, Statoil’s president and CEO. He added that this move aligns with the company’s strategy to gradually complement its oil and gas portfolio with renewables.
E.on plans to build the EUR-1.2-billion-plus (USD 1.35bn) wind park some 35 km (21.7 miles) northeast of Ruegen Island in German waters. The facility will comprise 60 pieces of 6-MW Siemens wind turbines mounted on monopile foundations. They will be installed at depths of 23 m to 37 m.
The Arkona wind park is expected to start power generation in 2019. Its annual output is estimated to be enough for about 400,000 households.
