July 9 (Renewables Now) - As of today, the UK subsidiary of German utility E.on SE (ETR:EOAN) is providing all of its residential customers across Britain with a 100% renewable electricity supply as standard, at no extra cost.
E.on said in a statement that more than 3.3 million households now have an electricity supply matched by renewable sources such as wind, biomass and solar thanks to this move.
The change follows a survey of electricity customers, which revealed that some 61% of Britons not currently on a renewable tariff, are interested in switching to a renewable power supplier if this is done at a reasonable price.
E.on noted that a large proportion of the supplied renewable power comes from its own generation fleet and through contracts with independent local wind generators. The remainder is sourced externally through renewable electricity guarantee certificates.
At present, E.on owns over 20 onshore and offshore wind farms in the UK along with biomass plants in Scotland and South Yorkshire.
