Sep 17, 2012 - Italy's Enel Green Power (BIT:EGPW) said Friday it had put into operation 3.8 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) rooftop solar systems in Italy, while its ESSE 50/50 joint venture with Japan's Sharp (TYO:6753) had brought online 1.5 MW of installations.
The capacity installed by the renewables arm of energy group Enel SpA (BIT:ENEL) is spread across six systems, all on the roofs of warehouses. Four of the facilities, totalling more than 2.3 MW, are located in Termoli in the southern Italian region of Molise. The other two, which have a combined capacity of some 1.5 MW, are in Casoli and Nocciano in the neighbouring region of Abruzzi.
Overall, the six installations are expected to produce over 4.5 million kWh of power and offset over 2,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year. They bring Enel Green Power's installed PV capacity to over 140 MW.
ESSE, which focuses on PV development in the Mediterranean region, meanwhile, has placed into service two solar installations totalling about 1.5 MW in Campania, southern Italy. The systems, Colbuccaro, Acerra 2 and Montegranaro, Acerra 1, are located on the rooftops of eight farm sheds. They are estimated to generate over 1.8 million kWh annually and offset more than 900 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Including these facilities, the joint venture now has more than 20 MW of installed capacity.
The two systems of ESSE use thin-film modules made at 3Sun's factory Catania, Sicily. 3Sun is a joint venture between Enel Green Power, Sharp and Switzerland-based semiconductor company STMicroelectronics (EPA:STM, BIT:STM).
