Egypt sets FiTs of up to USD 0.14/kWh for renewables - report

Sep 22, 2014 - Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity on Saturday set feed-in tariffs (FiTs) of between EGP 0.84 (USD 0.12/EUR 0.09) and EGP 1.025 per kWh of generated solar power, Daily News Egypt reported.

The FiTs that households and private sector firms will receive depend on the amount of solar electricity produced and are classified in five categories. The highest tariff of EGP 1.025 per kWh will be paid to solar power plants with capacities of between 20 MW and 50 MW. Those of over 50 MW will receive tariffs under a different system.

As for wind energy generation, the FiT will be based on the number of operating hours. It is set at EGP 0.828 per kWh of electricity produced for between 2,500 and 3,000 operating hours, electricity minister Mohamed Shaker said, as quoted by the newspaper. For 3,000-4,000 hours the rate is EGP 0.684.

By introducing the tariffs, the government of Egypt seeks to attract investments in the private sector so that about 4,300 MW of solar and wind capacity is installed, Shaker has said. Its goal is for renewables to account for 20% of the country’s total power mix by 2020.
