Denmark’s Dong Energy A/S (CPH:DENERG) said today it has become the first company in the world to achieve the milestone of installing and commissioning 1,000 offshore wind turbines.
The energy company did so while installing the turbines that make up the 252-MW Gode Wind 2 wind farm in the German part of the North Sea, it added. The particular project comprises 42 units of Siemens’ 6-MW machines.
The Danish company expects to add more offshore wind power capacity in 2016-2020 than what was built altogether in the preceding 25 years, it noted. At the end of last year, Dong Energy had roughly 3 GW of installed offshore wind turbines.
Dong Energy installed its first offshore wind turbine, with a capacity of 0.45 MW, as part of the Vindeby project 25 years ago. Today, the company’s projects are being equipped with turbines of up to 8 MW.
