Sep 24, 2012 - Solar products maker Canadian Solar Inc (NASDAQ:CSIQ) today said it had supplied the solar modules for a 3.6-MW rooftop photovoltaic (PV) installation at the Hamburg-Wittenburg winter sports centre in Germany.
The solar system will help the owner of the skiing hall, Dutch hotel group Van der Valk, reduce significantly the building's energy costs, according to the announcement. Thanks to the installation, the winter sports facility will be able to operate throughout the whole year powered only by the self-generated electricity. In this way, the operator will be independent from the grid and government subsidies, Canadian Solar said. In addition, the shadowing effect of the solar system reduces the roof's surface temperature, which leads to lower costs for cooling the skiing hall, the solar company added.
Hamburg-based project firm Dr Metje Consulting developed and realised the project.
"Projects like the alpincenter Hamburg-Wittenburg are the future of solar energy: PV systems that cover the facility's complete energy demand and that do not depend on public subsidies," said Canadian Solar chairman and chief executive Shawn Qu.
