The Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario (FedNor) has approved a CAD-2.7-million (USD 2.1m/EUR 1.9m) investment in an entity that will deploy renewable energy microgrids across the country.
The company, dubbed NCC Development Corp LP, will offer its green solutions to off-grid and remote communities in Canada. It will seek business opportunities on international markets too.
The FedNor investment will enable NCC to develop the structure of the organisation with the help of Canadian Solar Solutions Inc, part of solar major Canadian Solar Inc (NASDAQ:CSIQ). They will jointly work on building up its operational and technical capacity in order for it to work directly with First Nations and to ensure long-term and sustainable revenues.
Many of the targeted communities rely on diesel plants, that are running at or near their full capacity. More than half of the 28 remote First Nations in Northwestern Ontario will reach their maximum electrical load by 2017, according to a report by the Ontario Power Association.
