Sep 12, 2012 - Brazil's consumption of hydrous ethanol rose by 11.6% month-on-month to 507.5 million litres (134m gallons) in August 2012, data of the national union of fuel distributors Sindicom showed.
In annual terms, the consumption, however, marked a 12% drop.
Sao Paulo, the biggest ethanol producer and consumer among the Brazilian states, contributed strongly to the recovery when compared with July 2012. The state's ethanol sales grew to 326 million litres in August, from 289 million litres sold in the previous month. Compared to August 2011, Sao Paulo's sales were still down 9.9%.
From the beginning of 2012 to August, the consumption of hydrous ethanol accumulated an year-on-year decrease of 16.3% to 3.667 billion litres, Sindicom also said.
As for petrol (gasoline) consumption, it marked a 13.7% rise on the year to 2.526 billion litres last month, according to Sindicom.
In the first eight months of 2012, petrol consumption was 18.9 billion litres, or 12.4% higher than in January-August 2011.
Sindicom's members account for 60% and 75% of Brazil's hydrous ethanol and petrol markets, respectively.
