Oct 28, 2011 - Brazil's fuel distributor BR Distribuidora installed a 4.3-MW biodiesel-fired electricity generation unit at a plant of agricultural co-operative Copagril in the municipality Marechal Candido Rondon, Parana state.
The investments, of BRL 3.5 million (USD 2m/EUR 1.4m), were made by BR Distribuidora, also known by Petrobras Distribuidora, but will be paid back by Copagril, BR Distribuidora's energy sales manager Marcelo de Rosario Roma told Brazilian news agency Agencia Estado yesterday.
The new unit will meet the cooperative's demand in peak hours, when the electricity tariffs are by 35% higher, and will guarantee the supply of electricity in case of blackouts, according to Roma.
Under a 10-year agreement for the project, Petrobras Distribuidora, which is a subsidiary of local federal oil and gas major Petrobras (SAO:PETR3; NYSE:PBR), will supply the biodiesel for the unit.
The fuel distributor had already installed similar units for agroindustrial cooperative Cooperativa Agroindustrial Lar, plastic plant Parana and building materials manufacturer Eternit, with a combined capacity of 147 MW.
