BANJA LUKA (Bosnia and Herzegovina), September 29 (SeeNews) – Bosnia's Sistem Ecologica has opened the first ever biodiesel plant in the war-divided state, Dnevni Avaz daily reported on Monday.
The government of Bosnia’s ethnic Serb Republic announced earlier this year that the plant will be built in Srbac, northern Bosnia, under a $15 million (10.4 million euro) investment.
The initial annual capacity of the plant is 180,000 tonnes, Avaz reported. The company will invest a further $15 million to expand capacity in 2009, the paper said, but did not provide details.
Biodiesel is an alternative fuel that is produced from animal fats or vegetable oils, including recycled restaurant cooking oils, which can be used without modifications in any diesel engine.
Sistem Ecologica started operating with imported oils and fats, but will start buying rapeseed from domestic producers as of next year. It has contracted biodiesel sales with Bosnian forwarders and hopes to export part of the output.
The Serb Republic is one of the two autonomous parts forming war-divided Bosnia. The other is the ethnic Muslim-Croat Federation.
