BLM leases parcels for geothermal development in Utah

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which is part of the US Department of the Interior, on Wednesday said it has leased eight parcels in Utah in a competitive geothermal lease sale.

The parcels cover 21,685 acres (8,776 ha) of public lands and are located in Beaver and Millard counties. The auction was conducted on April 12 and yielded USD 794,028 (EUR 750,288) for leases. The results of the sale list RodaTherm Energy Corp of Alberta, Canada and Velikan Renewables LLC of Texas as successful bidders.

An additional 9,791 acres across three parcels in Fillmore and Millard counties have been leased by non-competitive sale.

The lease sale aligns with BLM’s aim to permit 25 GW of solar, wind and geothermal generation on public lands by 2025 and contribute to the US goal of a decarbonised power sector by 2035.

As announced recently by the Department of the Interior, the BLM has so far approved over 120 renewable energy projects on public land with an overall capacity of over 12 GW.
