(SeeNews) - Oct 23, 2012 - US aerospace, defence firm Alliant Techsystems Inc (NYSE:ATK) today said it had received a USD-6.4-million (EUR 4.9m) contract to develop a solar array for the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
ATK's MegaFlex solar array has been selected in a competition for the development of a lightweight and compact solar structure for NASA's Space Technology Programme.
The company is currently advancing the MegaFlex array designed to have capacity of 350 kW and higher, very low mass and small stowed volume for future space exploration missions. The array, which is based on ATK's UltraFlex solar technology, will provide 10 times more power than the largest current satellite array technology, according to ATK.
NASA's 18-month phase I technology development programme will boost the solar array size to twice that of the UltraFlex and will improve the technical readiness level of the MegaFlex design via hardware development and verification testing. ATK added that it would develop a flight-ready MegaFlex version for a future space demonstration during the phase II technology development plan.
