Independent power producer Alten Energias Renovables said on Tuesday it has won the tender held by state-owned electricity company NamPower for a 45.5-MWp solar project in Namibia.
Alten has thus obtained the right to develop, execute and operate the plant, which, with a capacity of 37 MW in AC, is one of the biggest in Sub-Saharan Africa, excluding South Africa.
The company is part of the investment vehicle, called Alten Hardap, that also includes NamPower and local investors. The state-owned company will hold a 19% stake in the project.
The parties expect to invest a total of USD 45 million (EUR 40m) in the project. Alten said that work on the financial closure and implementation planning phases has already been initiated and that the solar park should be commissioned in early 2018.
The solar photovoltaic (PV) plant will be built on a 100-hectare (247-acre) site on the outskirts of Mariental in the Hardap region. Its roughly 140,000 crystalline silicon panels mounted on solar trackers will generate an estimated 116 GWh of electricity per year, enough to meet 3% of the country’s energy needs.
