Albioma SA (EPA:ABIO) will install photovoltaic (PV) arrays with a combined capacity of 4.8 MWp atop buildings throughout Reunion Island, in the Indian Ocean, the French renewable energy producer said on Thursday.
The company will build a total of 51 solar plants at the roofs of apartment buildings operated by Societe Anonyme d'Habitations e Loyer Modere de la Reunion (SHLMR) in several towns. It intends to initiate construction in the second half of next year and bring the plants online by late 2019.
The PV installations will be connected to the power grid operated by French electric utility EDF SA (EPA:EDF). Requests for connections to the network, on the basis of the regulatory feed-in tariffs (FiTs) from May 2017, have been either submitted or will be filed by June.
The combined output of the rooftop solar systems is expected to be 6.9 GWh per year, or enough to meet the annual demand of around 2,320 local homes. The generated electricity will help offset 5,520 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year, Albioma estimates.
