AES Bulgaria, a unit of U.S.-based energy conglomerate AES Corporation, said that its thermal power plant (TPP) AES Galabovo and the St. Nikola wind farm produced some 1,680 GWh of electricity combined in the first half of 2021.
TPP AES Galabovo generated over 1,500 GWh of electricity in the January-June period, an 18% increase on an annual comparison basis, AES Bulgaria said in a statement on Wednesday.
The St. Nikola wind farm produced 172 GWh of electricity during the fist six months of the year. This is close to a quarter of the country's wind energy output for the review period, AES Bulgaria noted in the statement.
The wind park accounts for about 22% to the total installed electricity generation capacity from wind power in Bulgaria, according to the statement.
The combined output of the TPP and the wind farm covered 9% of the total electricity consumption in Bulgaria during the period under review, the statement reads.
In 1999, a unit of U.S.-based energy conglomerate AES Corporation purchased the majority interest in Bulgaria's Maritsa East 1 project, subsequently renamed AES Galabovo in 2009. AES completed the full acquisition of the thermal power plant from Ireland's Consolidated Continental Commerce Limited (3C) in 2005.
