Offshore wind turbines maker Adwen announced on Thursday it has initiated the final stages in the installation of its 8-MW prototype in Bremerhaven, Germany.
The company had already completed the foundation of the AD 8-180 prototype earlier in 2017 and has now also finalised the installation of the first three sections of the tower, including the power section. It expects to install the fourth one in the coming days, while the final section will be installed at the same time as the nacelle, Adwen said in a statement.
The nacelle has already gone through pre-commissioning tests at Fraunhofer IWES DyNaLab. The hub has been mounted on it and they are now undergoing additional testing together.
“We are convinced that our wind turbine will be a top performer and a key contribution in the race to reduce the levelized cost of offshore wind energy thanks to its reliability and unmatched annual energy production (AEP),” said David Guiu, Adwen chief commercial officer.
The company notes that the AD 8-180 is based on its 5-MW platform. The new model has a nominal capacity of 8 MW and a 180-metre (590.8 ft) rotor. It has already been chosen for three offshore wind projects in French waters totalling 1.5 GW.
